Biography

Beatrice Lampla Mellinger · Bela

"Painting is a universal language that enhances the awareness and understanding of other cultures."

Beatrice Lampla Mellinger, also known as Bela, was born on the French Caribbean island of Martinique — where African, Asian, and European cultures have converged for centuries into a singular creole heritage.

Art has always been an important part of Bela's life. She studied painting extensively and works with different mediums and various techniques — from encaustic wax to oil, from geometric abstraction to landscape — to create her narratives.

Bela's work incorporates multicultural references from her Asian, African, and European ancestors, and from her birthplace, with its own multi-ethnic heritage. This synthesis defines her singular artistic voice.

She has exhibited widely in galleries and art fairs in the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. Having lived and studied painting in many countries across several continents, her paintings convey the richness of this global experience.

Bela currently resides in Martinique, F.W.I., where she continues to explore and investigate new narratives — always returning to the volcanic light and oceanic depth of her island home.

"My work is a synthesis — between the island and the continent, between tradition and innovation."
